title: Start a Pallet Project — Quick Checklist description: A fast pre-build checklist: safety, sourcing, minimum tools, and the first 2-hour work session.

Start a Pallet Project — Quick Checklist

Use this page before your first cut. If you can check every box here, you're ready to start.

1) Safety first (non-negotiable)

  • I know to reject any pallet stamped MB (Methyl Bromide)
  • I will only use plain, discarded pallets (not blue/red/brown rental pallets)
  • I will reject pallets with spills, oily stains, or chemical smells
  • I have gloves, eye protection, and a dust mask

Reference: The Basics → Safety

2) Sourcing plan

  • I have at least 2–3 sources to ask (store, site manager, listings)
  • I will ask permission before taking pallets
  • I will collect extra material (30–40% over my target)

Reference: The Basics → Sourcing

3) Minimum tool kit

  • Pry bar or wrecking bar
  • Hammer
  • Drill/driver
  • Saw (circular, miter, or reciprocating saw for deconstruction)
  • Sander + sandpaper (60/120/220)
  • Tape measure + square + pencil

Reference: The Basics → Tools

4) First 2-hour session plan

Goal: finish a clean prep batch so your next session can focus on building.

  • 0:00–0:20 Inspect + reject unsafe/contaminated pallets
  • 0:20–1:00 Deconstruct one pallet fully
  • 1:00–1:30 Remove all nails/staples from usable boards
  • 1:30–2:00 Sort boards by size/quality + quick cleanup

Done when you have a small, clean pile of fastener-free boards ready to measure.

5) Definition of ready-to-build

  • Boards are clean and dry
  • No nails/staples remain
  • Boards are sorted by thickness/quality
  • I have a rough sketch based on my real board inventory
